Abel is presented at a table seated on a Gothic revival chair. His left hand rests on an open book with other volumes bookended on the table. A wastepaper basket can be seen under the table and a small stool behind the sitter. Abel wears a dark suit and has prominent side whiskers. Printed below the image: 'MAULL & Co. LONDON'. The reverse has various inscriptions
