and it certainly must have taken some effort to get to paint those balls inside their cages

While I can't say for certain that the painting dates to the same period, I am pretty confident it does, and it is very much in the manner of eagles being drawn, painted and carved during and just after the Civil War. 13 bright yellow stars for the 13 colonies surrounding this wonderful big eagle,
