Taylor (1817 1880) was a popular Victorian playwright who wrote some 70 plays in all. His best known works are probably 'The Dead Heart' (1859), 'The Ticket of Leave Man' (1863), and 'Our American Cousin' (1858), the play that President Abraham Lincoln was watching when he was assassinated in 1865.
