Lord Kitchener (1850 1916) regained the Sudan for Egypt by his victory at the Battle of Omdurman (1898). He was commander of British forces during the Boer War (1899 1902) and served as War Minister from 1914 to 1916. His portrait was used on a famous World War I army recruitment poster. Kitchener drowned when HMS 'Hampshire', carrying him to Russia, was sunk by a German mine
