Sir John Barnard, Lord Mayor 1737 childhood Tower Bridge with bascules closed'Sir John Barnard, Lord Mayor 1737', 1738. Sir John was a merchant and politician. As well as Lord Mayor of London, he was MP for the City, Sheriff (1735) and Alderman (1728 1756). On the table behind Sir John are the symbols of office of the Lord Mayor, including the ceremonial sword.
