About the project

Whilst the primary aim of Joy of Learning is to enable Education and get children ‘from Sanyu to School’, we must also ensure that the basic needs of each family are met. Having a safe place to sleep is a basic need. Without a safe space to sleep, we can’t expect children to attend school and learn.

At Joy of Learning, we believe that no child should be sleeping on a dirt floor, without a mosquito net and at risk of being attacked by snakes or bitten by rats. Malaria is very prevalent in Uganda, and sleeping without a mosquito net increases the risk of being bitten and contracting this disease. It can cause life-long conditions and even death.

As part of this project, we want to ensure that every Joy of Learning family has a safe place to sleep for all members of the family, by providing beds, mattresses, blankets, bed sheets and mosquito nets. Each family will receive support tailored to their needs and family members.

The difference this project makes...

Divine’s Family were one of the first families enrolled into school by Joy of Learning in May 2023. During their first two terms at school, their attendance was poor as they were constantly sick, mainly with malaria. In December 2023, we gifted the family a triple decker bunk bed complete with 3 mattresses, bed sheets, blankets and mosquito nets. When we visited them in March 2024, we found that none of the family had contracted malaria since and no school had been missed. Having a safe place to sleep has simply changed the lives of Divine’s Family.

It doesn't cost much to provide a safe sleep

Triple Decker Bunkbed – £90

Mattress – £25

Blanket – £7

Set of Bedsheets – £7

Mosquito Net – £2
